How to Play Codenames With 2 Players (Co-op Rules That Work)
Codenames is built for two teams, but you don't need a crowd to enjoy it. With one small rule tweak, a Codenames-style game works brilliantly for two players — as a co-op puzzle you beat together. Here's how.
The co-op setup for 2 players
Instead of red versus blue, you both play on the same side. One person is the spymaster and can see which words belong to your team; the other is the guesser. Your shared goal: reveal all of one team's words without ever tapping the assassin.
Add a target to create tension
Give yourselves a limited number of clues — say nine — to clear all your words. Run out of clues or hit the assassin and you lose the round together. Beat it, then swap roles and chase a better score.
Why 2-player co-op is secretly great
Competitive Codenames hides half the fun — you never see the other spymaster's brain at work. In two-player co-op every clue is a shared "aha", and the assassin is a genuine group gasp. It's also the best way to learn the game: the guesser sees exactly how a good clue connects to the board.
Play it online, free
Set it up with the physical board, or just open a WordSpies room, both join from your phones, and use the spymaster and guesser roles built in. Fresh boards every game keep the co-op challenge alive. Start a free game and see how many words the two of you can clear.
